Skype internet telephony is very cool. It's a hugely popular VoIP service, over 133 million downloads so
far. It let's you make telephone calls anywhere in the world, either PC-to-PC to other Skype users for free, or
PC-to-regular telephones for a very small fee. For example, Thailand to the U.S. for 2.3 cents U.S. per
minute. A great way to stay in touch with your sweetie in Thailand. That's about 1 baht per minute.
So you can buy some Skype minutes and then your lady can go to almost any internet shop and call you, talk
for a long time, and not break the bank.
We love it! We just started using it and it is going to open up a lot more possibilities for us to stay
in better touch with customers, friends and family. All you need is a PC, a good internet connection (broadband
is better) and an inexpensive microphone/speaker combination or a headset.
They even give you free minutes to try it out! We've been reading about internet calling services for a
while, Skype, Vonage, and others, and then saw they were giving away 10 free minutes at Skype. So we
downloaded and installed it, and made our first international telephone call - very cool. Quality is
pretty good, as good as many of the calls we have made at 8 to 10 times the price.
In addition, there is a big Skype community, lots of activity surrounding its use, blogs, add-ons, even
special built hardware to use with the service.
As we gain more experience with using it and exploring all the interesting add-ons we will update this
page with reviews and links.
